Preserving the Legacy

The history of Berekuso is a story of migration, courage, resilience and the preservation of ancestral heritage. Its history is closely connected with the wider history of the Akuapem traditional area and the movements of Akan and Guan communities across the region. According to the oral traditions preserved by the people, the ancestors of Berekuso went through a long journey before establishing the community in its present location. Their movement was shaped by the search for a secure and suitable place to settle, farm and raise their families, as well as by the wars and political changes that affected communities in the region. Historical accounts identify the people of Berekuso with Akwamu/Akan traditions and record a series of migrations before their settlement in the present Berekuso area. One account states that they moved from Twifo-Hemang through places including Abetenase, Gomoa Nyanmangmu, Ofankor and Nyanawase before later moving to Agyankote.
